Capturing the Connemara Marathon: A Photographer’s Journey
Introduction
Photographing the Connemara Marathon is an annual highlight for me. Ever since I began covering this event in 2019, I’ve been captivated by its scenic beauty and the spirit of the runners. The Connemara Marathon stands out as the most picturesque running event in Ireland, drawing participants from all corners of the globe.
Recess: The Ultra Marathon Start
My coverage kicks off with a group photo of the 60km ultra marathon runners in Recess. The anticipation is palpable as they set off on their grueling journey. The backdrop of the Connemara landscape adds drama to every frame.
Inagh Valley: Where the Marathon Begins
Inagh Valley marks the official start of the marathon, Here, I capture the runners as they weave through the valley,
No time to stop…
Half Marathon in Leenane
This year, I expanded my coverage to include the half marathon. The race begins in the charming village of Leenane, nestled on the shores of Killary Harbour—the only fjord in Ireland.
Maam Valley to Maam Cross
The next leg of the Connemara Marathon takes runners through the picturesque Maam Valley. As they ascend from Maam, the landscape unfolds—a tapestry of rolling hills and lush greenery. The air is filled with determination, and the runners push themselves toward the finish line.
Henry trying to get a high five from all the runners!
Towards The Finish Line
The very last section of the race is a long downhill stretch toward the finish line. This spot, one of my favorites, captures the runners’ exhilaration as they sprint to the end.
The Finish Line
Photographing the Connemara Marathon is more than a job; it’s a passion. As the runners cross the finish line, I’m reminded that some moments are worth freezing in time.
