Happy New Year!

Just a small blog post to start the year. I’d like to start the new year with two bits of important advise. First of all, and this is very important, make sure to bring your your camera strap, when you want to go for a walk with the camera. For years I have been using quick detachable camera straps from Peak Design, I think they are absolutely brilliant. The problem is when you forget to bring them along, so you end up carrying your camera …in the cold….with no gloves….

Gliding in to the new year

But enough about camera straps, the light was absolutely fantastic today! The tide was out, and the evening light created beautiful reflections.

My second bit of advice is, and this is something I wanted to share for years, wide angle lenses are overrated and overused.

I don’t know how many times I have heard people say….you need a wide angle lens for landscape photography. Wide angle lenses are often bought by beginners, who are trying to get into landscape photography. The problem with that approach is, it it is actually very difficult to produce a great, well composed landscape image with a wide angle lens.

I took all of the images in this post with my telephoto lens in the space of an hour. And I have to say, that I’m very pleased with the images, I brought back from my little walk today. Yes, the light was great, and the scenery is just beautiful. But using a longer lens made capturing these images so easy! And when something is easy to do, it free’s up the mind, it allows us to be more creative…and that’s a good thing!

So what I’m trying to say is, a telephoto lens is in my opinion a much more useful lens for a beginner, than the wide angle lens that’s often recommended.

Enough about lenses and camera straps, here are some more images from today.

And that’s it for today, until next week.
