Setting Sail

Sometimes dreams come true! I know, that sounds a bit over the top, but that's exactly how I felt last Saturday. After photographing the famous turf boats sailing into Kinvara from the other side of the bay for years, I finally got the chance to sail on one.

The weather wasn't great on the day, it was quite breezy and the sky was rather dark. Having said that...I love dark days with dramatic skies! Few things are more boring than a completely blue sky.

The boat at Parkmore pier, Kinvara.

Getting the sails ready

One of the most important rules in photography, get the names of the people you photograph, get the name of the location, the village, the pub...the damn boat! I didn't get any names...I just enjoyed the ride...sorry about that.

We are almost ready to go now.

That looks about right!

And we are away!

The captain of the boat, a very nice man from Connemara.

Our cargo? Turf...of course!

No electric winches here, sailing a Galway hooker is hard work.

The friendly looking guy with the two cameras? Galway based photographer and blogger, Sean McCormack.

Looks like...rain...again

We have reached our destination, Kinvara.

Sailing into the harbour, we met those guys practising for the curragh race. You heard what the O'Donovan's said lads...just close your eyes and pull like a dog!

Only one thing left to do now, unload the turf!

What can I say? I want to go again! And I probably will, next year, next Cruinniu na Mbad......
