Workshop Photo Walks

The Burren, one of Ireland’s most fascinating landscapes.

The Rocky Place

I count myself extremely lucky to have settled down in the foothills of the Burren, one of Ireland's - and indeed Europe's - most spectacular natural landscapes. As a fully qualified tour guide, I'm always looking for an extra excuse to get out and about and show visitors around my corner of the country.

'An Boireann' in Irish Gaelic translates to 'rocky place.' And what a fitting description that is. The Burren is a sea of grey limestone, its waves undulating towards the Clare coastline. Not only that but the whole area is crisscrossed by numerous stone walls. History buffs out there will instantly recognise these as 'famine walls' built pointlessly on government work schemes. Locals toiled aimlessly up and down the moonscape of the Burren during the famine years. They are a dark reminder of Ireland's past.

Yet beyond the lunar outcrops and craggy striations lies much, much more. The Burren is home to rare alpine plants, orchids that grow nowhere else in Ireland, and lonesome trees that practically beg to be photographed. The region is also jam-packed with historic sites. Nowhere else in the country can you find quite so many tombs, ring forts, and early Christian churches and monasteries that have survived the passage of time.

Interested in exploring the Burren and getting off the beaten track? Let me be your guide and show you some of my favourite places along the way. There are also plenty of idyllic photo spots and other hidden gems to discover. The Burren is likewise a delight for foodies and I'll take you to some of my favourite eateries if you like.

Tailor-made for you

Prior to our outing, we'll discuss exactly what it is that you'd most like to see. Are you an avid photographer? Do you prefer seascapes to landscapes or a bit of both? Or are you most interested in the region's historical sites? We can also arrange for a professional model to attend specific photo shoots or to show off your business's latest line. Or is it even all of the above? Whatever your preference, you name it. The Burren is brimming with opportunities for all types of visitors. As a professional guide, we can also forget about photography altogether and simply take in the sights and learn about them as we go.

  • We’ll discuss photographic skill level before we start

  • What are the goals?

  • What equipment did they bring to Ireland?

  • How familiar are they with their camera?

After the walk…

Afterward, we'll find a nice place to sit down, grab a cup of tea (or a pint), and look through some of your images from the day. We'll discuss the basics of photo editing and how to best utilise the latest image processing software on the computer. But don't worry, we won't spend hours and hours in Photoshop. I stay as true to the original image as possible and prefer to keep it simple when it comes to editing photos. Instead, the emphasis will be on fundamental and effective editing techniques that you can continue to use in your workflow back at home.
